Illuminate Your Outdoor Space: Exploring the Beauty and Benefits of Landscape Lighting

In this month's blog, we will discuss the benefits and types of landscape lighting. Landscape lighting not only enhances the appearance of your home by creating an elegant ambiance, but it also improves safety by illuminating pathways and preventing accidents. There are several different types of landscape lights available, including spotlights, path lights, wall wash lights, and hardscape lights, each serving a specific purpose and contributing to the desired aesthetic. These lights can be categorized based on their power source: solar or hardwired (also known as low voltage).

Solar-powered lights have significantly evolved over the past five years. Previously, they were dim and often made with cheaper components and plastic bodies. However, modern solar lights are much brighter, built with durable metal bodies, and offer LED options. They also provide the convenience of adjusting the light color from warm-white to bright-white and can be controlled, turned on/off, and set on timers using your phone (features vary based on the model and may require additional components). While high-quality solar lights may be relatively expensive, they remain cost-efficient compared to traditional low-voltage lights.

Low voltage lights vary in price depending on the type and brand. They can cost 15% less than certain solar lights or more than twice the price per light. Low voltage lights require a power source, necessitating the use of a transformer and landscape light wire buried at least 6" deep. Consequently, while it may be possible to purchase all the necessary components for low-voltage lights at a comparable price to solar lights, it's important to consider the labor involved in installing low-voltage lights. Solar-powered landscape lights can be easily installed by homeowners with little skill or knowledge, whereas low-voltage lights are often best handled by professionals unless you have a good understanding of how they work.

However, it's worth noting that solar lights have some limitations. They rely on ample sunlight to power the lights, which may render them ineffective in certain areas. For instance, if you have a dark courtyard with limited or no sun exposure, low-voltage lighting becomes the only viable option.

We hope this blog has provided you with a better understanding of landscape lighting and the available options. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out!
