Question of the Week: Smart Soil Solutions

Q: I have a tall planter to fill with soil for planting. I need a lot of soil but don’t want to spend too much on good soil for the bottom. Where can I get some fill dirt for about 18” before adding good soil?

A: Look into your local gravel company for "clean" fill dirt. Another option is to check if anyone has free access to dirt. Once you've filled the bottom of the planter to the desired height with fill dirt, compact it down. I recommend using a weed barrier before adding your quality planting soil to prevent unwanted growth in your new flowerbed.
