Question of the Week: Tackling Those Persistent Weeds

Q: With the recent rain, the weeds on my property have taken off. After pulling them out, roots and all, from my river rock-covered area, what's the best way to keep them from coming back?

A: It sounds like you might not have a weed barrier under the rocks. The most effective solution would be to remove the rocks, lay down a weed barrier, and then replace the rocks. If the rocks you removed are mixed with dirt, it’s a good idea to consider getting new ones, as the dirt likely contains seeds that will lead to more weeds, even with a barrier in place.

Another option is to use a product called Preen. It can be scattered over the area to help control weed growth. Keep in mind that weed seeds in the soil can still germinate, but Preen can help prevent them from taking root, though it won't completely eliminate weeds.
